๐ Our Europe by Train & Bus Journey
From Chamonix → Milan → Paris → Geneva (Family Travel Route Guide)
By Mama Ice & Max Travels
“We didn’t just cross countries — we crossed moments. Each station became part of our story.”
| Chamonix on Autumn |
During our Autumn 2022 family vacation, we explored four cities — Chamonix, Milan, Paris, and Geneva — using only buses and trains.
It was a slower way to travel, but it turned out to be the most memorable: scenic mountain roads, cozy train rides, and laughter echoing through train stations as Max tried to pronounce each city’s name.
Here’s our station-by-station route, with all the details on how we traveled — easy to follow for anyone planning a similar trip through Europe.
๐️ Part 1: Geneva Airport → Chamonix (by bus)
๐ Route: Geneva Airport (GVA) → Chamonix Sud Bus Station
Duration: Around 1 hour 45 minutes
Operator: AlpyBus or FlixBus
๐ Details:
-
We landed at Geneva Airport (Gare Routiรจre de Genรจve Aรฉroport).
-
From the bus terminal just outside the airport, we took a direct shuttle to Chamonix Sud Bus Station.
-
The journey was scenic — passing through small villages and valleys framed by the Alps.
-
Max loved spotting snow-capped peaks as we climbed higher!
๐ Travel Tip:
Book your ticket in advance on AlpyBus.com or FlixBus.com.
Try to sit on the right side of the bus for the best mountain views.
๐ฎ๐น Part 2: Chamonix → Milan (by bus)
๐ Route: Chamonix Sud → Milan Lampugnano Bus Station
Duration: Around 5.5 hours
Operator: FlixBus
๐ Details:
-
We left from Chamonix Sud Bus Station, a small and easy-to-navigate terminal.
-
The bus passed through Mont Blanc Tunnel — one of the longest tunnels in Europe (about 11 km!).
-
You’ll briefly enter Courmayeur (Italy) before heading toward Aosta and then into the flatlands of northern Italy.
-
Arrival at Milan Lampugnano Bus Station, which connects easily to the M1 Metro Line (red line) that goes straight to the city center (Duomo).
๐ Travel Tip:
-
Bring snacks! There’s no food stop along the route.
-
If you’re traveling with kids, pack a few activities or tablets for the long ride.
-
From Lampugnano, take Metro Line 1 (red) → Duomo (approx. 15 min).
๐ซ๐ท Part 3: Milan → Paris (by train)
๐ Route: Milano Centrale → Paris Gare de Lyon
Duration: About 6 hours 45 minutes
Operator: TGV INOUI (French high-speed train, operated by SNCF & Trenitalia)
๐ Details:
-
We boarded at Milano Centrale, one of Europe’s most beautiful train stations — grand, elegant, and easy to navigate.
-
The train crossed northern Italy, passing Turin, then entered France via the Alps.
-
Along the way: lakes, hills, and endless autumn colours through the window.
-
Arrival at Paris Gare de Lyon, right in the heart of Paris.
๐ Travel Tip:
-
Choose 1st class or family seat section for extra space if traveling with kids.
-
Bring light meals — the train cafรฉ is nice but limited.
๐จ๐ญ Part 4: Paris → Geneva (by train)
๐ Route: Paris Gare de Lyon → Genรจve Cornavin
Duration: Around 3 hours 10 minutes
Operator: TGV Lyria
๐ Details:
-
Departed from Paris Gare de Lyon, the same station we arrived in from Milan.
-
The high-speed TGV Lyria train is clean, fast, and family-friendly.
-
The route passes through Burgundy’s wine country before reaching the Swiss border.
-
Arrival at Genรจve Cornavin Station, located near Lake Geneva and about 15 minutes from the airport.
๐ Travel Tip:
-
Seats on the left side offer better views entering Switzerland.
-
The family section on TGV Lyria has more space for kids to move around.
-
From Cornavin, you can take a quick tram or taxi to your hotel or the lake.

๐ก Mama Ice Tips for Europe by Train & Bus
-
๐ Pack light! European trains have limited luggage space, especially near seats.
-
๐️ Book tickets early — cheaper and guaranteed seats for families.
-
๐ซ Bring snacks — train food can be pricey and limited.
-
๐ง Download entertainment offline (shows, audiobooks, kids’ music).
-
๐ฑ Use Trainline app — easy for checking schedules and platform info.
-
๐ฐ️ Arrive early — some stations like Milan Centrale and Gare de Lyon are huge.
๐ธ Closing Thoughts
Looking back, I’m so glad we chose to travel slowly by bus and train instead of flying between cities. Watching the world change through the window — mountains, vineyards, city skylines — was magical.
Max still remembers calling every train station “a new adventure.”
And honestly, he was right. Each stop was a new chapter of our autumn story.
“Sometimes the journey itself becomes the most beautiful destination.”
